Transitioning from the Military to Civilian Life

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Making the move from military service to a civilian career can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming. Whenever I chat with soldiers, sailors, airmen, or Marines who are about to make this leap, I always tell them how lucky they are to be doing it now. Reflecting on my own transition nearly three decades ago, resources were few and far between, and finding the right support was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Today, things are a lot different. Transition Assistance Programs (TAP) offered by each branch of the military have come a long way. They’re designed to really set you up for success. And beyond TAP, there’s a whole world of Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) out there, ready to help you take the next steps in your career. Groups like the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and Disabled American Veterans (DAV) are fantastic places to start.

Even though TAP is a requirement before you separate, it can still be tricky to figure out where to find and use these VSOs if you’re not sure where to look. But trust me, these organizations do more than just offer support – they’ve got connections in the business world that can open doors for you.

Another great resource is your local State Employment Agency, where you’ll find Local Veteran Employment Reps (LVERs). These folks are dedicated to helping veterans find jobs. I highly recommend setting up a meeting with your local rep. They’re there to connect you with employers who are specifically interested in hiring veterans, and they can help with things like resume writing and other job search services. Plus, they’re often well-connected with VSOs and companies like SMG that have their own military and veteran recruiting programs.

One last tip: network, network, network! Get on LinkedIn, Facebook, or whatever social media platform you prefer, and start connecting with other veterans and veteran groups. The bond you share with your fellow service members doesn’t end when you transition out. There’s always someone willing to help – you just have to reach out and ask.
